Healthy Eating at the Golden Corral

Monday, October 15th, 2007

Knife and ForkLast week I went to visit family in Kentucky and the consensus for one evening was to go eat at the Golden Corral restaurant.
For those that don’t know, the Golden Corral is a buffet style restaurant where you can eat as much as you want for about $10 per person. Since I always try to eat well and avoid foods that are blatantly fatty, I was a little hesitant to go to the GC but shortly after seating and going to the feeding line, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of healthy options offered by the restaurant.

I was able to eat plenty of food and walk out of the restaurant feeling satisfied with my eating choices. Here is a strategy that you can use to eat a healthy meal while at the Golden Corral:

  • Don’t drink soda – it costs extra and water is better for you
  • Start with a plate of salad with a little bit of lite dressing
  • I had a huge piece of grilled chicken with a sweet potato and another little bit of greenery as my main course but went back to try a little bit of a potato dish they had that was baked and mixed with onions – it was very tasty!
  • Focus on the veggies!  There was a very nice selection of steamed veggies like carrots and broccoli.  Although I’m not a big fan of broccoli I did eat plenty to help fill me up.
  • For desert I had 3 cookies and some chocolate ice cream.

By the end of the meal I felt very satisfied and also happy that I did not “pig out at the Hog Trough”. Also, avoid drinking soda. Have water instead. Not only will you save about $2 but you’ll also save on calories and chemicals that are contained in soda.

In conclusion, I would say that the Golden Corral is a good choice for people who want to go on a diet but don’t have the time to make a good meal. If you have the discipline to select healthy choices while at the restaurant, it is worth your $10 and it will benefit your waist line in the long run.

Streching at Work Made Easy

Monday, October 8th, 2007

proactolJay White from dumblittleman.com wrote an interesting article about keeping your energy throughout the day while you’re at work. He states that

Stretching causes you to breathe deeply bringing oxygen to your brain, in effect waking you up. Secondly, stretching releases the physical form of stress that is stored in your muscles. Storing that tension takes constant work by your muscles. Relieving that work frees up energy. Lastly, stretching helps your body remove toxins from your tissues. When you breathe deeply and move your body your lymph system is activated, cleansing the body of pollutants. The end result. You feel great!

So, here are some simple stretches that you can do at your desk to perk you up and keep you going strong throughout the day. Hold all of these stretches for about 5-10 seconds each.
Stretch
Elbow Push
Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor and reach your right arm across your body. With your left hand, gently push your right elbow towards your chest until you feel a nice stretch on your shoulder. Now repeat on the other side.

Raise the Roof
Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor and raise your arms up to the ceiling with your palms facing up. Reach as high as you can without moving your lower body.

Chest and Arm Stretch
Lean forward a little bit on your char while keeping your back straight. With your arms straight and and thumbs pointing up, move them as far back as you can go until you feel a good stretch on your chest. Now turn your thumbs until they’re facing down to stretch your upper arms.

Neck Stretch
Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor and lower your chin to your chest. Hold for 10 seconds and gently roll your right ear to your right shoulder. Hold for 10 seconds and gently roll your left year to your left shoulder.

Touch Your Toes
Stand up and bend at the waist. Reach down and try to touch your toes.

After a few simple stretches, go grab some water and go back to work energized!

Is Your Diet Working?

Fork and SpoonA successful diet can do wonders for your self-esteem and overall health in the long run, but an unsuccessful diet can ruin your hopes for looking gorgeous and feeling great. It seems as though everybody is trying out new diets today. It’s been pounded in our heads that we should eat more fruits and veggies while eating less of the “bad” stuff. I’d say that for the most part, we all know this but have a hard time making it happen.

We all try at least a little bit to eat healthy and avoid fattening foods when possible but it’s not always easy. And add to that our fast paced lives and packed schedules and we have a recipe for bad nutrition. All of a sudden you’re back in the yo-yo diet.

So what steps can you take to achieve weight loss?
One of the most important steps you can use is your common sense. You won’t starve to death with plenty of food around and your common sense would most likely make you feel aware not to give in when faced with cravings! Common sense is your best ally when it comes to smart diet choices. Just think to yourself: “is it wise to eat this?” and you’re on your way to honing your common sense.

Another important thing is to understand that your body needs a balance of proteins, sugars, fibers, vitamins and minerals, and fats at all meals so that 1) your body stays healthy and 2) you feel satisfied after a meal. Check out http://www.mypyramid.gov for more information on the recommended daily nutritional breakdown.

Planning
Getting the right nutrition can be hard for some of us because planning takes a bit of time and effort. Isn’t it true that it is a lot easier to reach out for a bag chips than to plan a balanced meal? Get yourself motivated and plan a healthy diet. Head to http://www.mypyramid.gov/steps/whatshouldyoueat.html and start your personal diet plan today!

Dieting is a part of life. A diet is simply what we eat. Why not eat healthy so that you can have a healthy diet and lose weight? With a healthy diet, along comes weight loss!
